WHY SHOULD I LEARN SPANISH?

There are twenty “Spanish-speaking” countries in the world: Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina in the Americas and Equatorial Guinea in Africa. Spanish is spoken today by over 500 million people. In addition to the above countries, it is widely used in many areas of the southern states of the USA. (Colorado, Arizona, California, New Mexico, Texas, Hispanic populations of New York and Florida). Hispanic residents of America number approximately 30 million. Finally for many years Spanish, English as well as the Tagal language were official languages in the Philippines, a former Spanish colony.

The official Spanish language is Castilian (idioma castellano or lengua castellana) which is used in politics, in legal texts and is spoken throughout Spain, Central and South America, the states of North Africa, the Canary Islands and the Philippines. Other languages that are spoken today in Spain besides castellano are: El catalán: spoken mainly in Catalonia. (Neo-Latin language) El gallego: spoken mainly in Galicia. (Neo-Latin language) El vasco: with roots in ancient Central European languages spoken in the Basque country. Finally, there are dialects mainly in rural areas such as: el asturiano, el aragonés, el balear, el valenciano. According to the 1978 Constitution, the above languages, along with Spanish (Castilian), are official languages in the Autonomous Regions where they are spoken, i.e. in Catalonia, Galicia and the Basque Country. In any case, we should realize that language evolves inevitably, some words fall into disuse, some new ones come to the fore “Linguae mutantur et nos mutamur in illis” (=Languages change and we change through them). The Spanish language student can simply begin the journey and wandering in a language that makes them dream, explore and get excited, and the Spanish language is perfect for that.
